What once was thought to be a case that Donald Trump was in his past has come into the spotlight once again. Donald Trump allegedly had a sexual relationship with porn star Stormy Daniels. During the election campaign of 2016 she had decided she was going to share that with the world.
Someone like Trump who at the time was running a campaign focused on conservative Christians who feel that the nation has been going in an immoral direction at the command of the “radical left” were supporting Donald Trump’s bid to The White House.
Therefore, when Stormy Daniels decided to go public about their alleged relationship, he wanted to keep her quiet. At the time his lawyer was Michael Cohen whom he relied on to deal with these kinds of issues and find ways to take care of them without bringing them to the spotlight, during a time where Donald Trump was close to election day and wanted to avoid any scandal.
Michael Cohen alleges that Donald Trump told him to pay her a significant amount of money to keep her quiet, which Cohen did and then invoiced Trump for legal services that were never provided at the time.
So now you must be thinking “What is he being indicted for?” well here is the list of charges being brought against him:
- Under NY Criminal law someone could be charge with a misdemeanour for falsifying business records aka the payments made to Cohen that were not related to legal fees as there was not a formal agreement between Trump and Cohen
- The prosecutor’s office is said to bump up the charges to a felony by testing a legal theory that Trump “made a donation to his own campaign” by stopping Stormy Daniels from coming forward with her story by the fact that this was done during a time where the elections were very close and therefore the hush money could be constituted as some sort of donation to his own campaign
The potential charges are being criticised by Trump and others as a political attack against Donald Trump and his 2024 bid to go back to The White House.
The problem with a statement like this is that the New York prosecutor is a state employee and this is not a federal case therefore many have said that Mr. Trump & Co are using this to attack the credibility of the case because it could harm his reputation and potential White House bid if ultimately found guilty.
