Andy Kroll of ProPublica, along with Andrew Perez and Aditi Ramaswami from The Lever, wrote this. ProPublica is an independent journalism organization that seeks to uncover any improper use of power. In their yearly tax documents, which are made public, it is a need for them to disclose where their resources are allocated. Nevertheless, often such information is not available as the organizations receiving their funds might be a part of the dark money sector with limited disclosure prerequisites. According to ProPublica and The Lever’s research published in August, Leo was given a $2.2 billion inheritance by the secretive industrialist Barre Seid in the previous year. The tax documents recently disclosed cover the time period in which Leo was obtaining a significant contribution. The Supreme Court case of the website creator from Colorado who won’t work for same-sex couples gives a glimpse into Leo’s approach. At least six entities that were financially backed by Leo’s circle have submitted statements in aid of the case, which is looking to revoke Colorado’s anti-prejudice rule. A brief in favor of the web designer was filed by the Ethics and Public Policy Center, which documents indicate was given $221 million from Leo’s network. Concerned Women for America has been a recipient of over two million dollars from the Leo network during the past two years, as well as the Becket Fund, who was given $22021,285 by the same Leo group. Additionally, Leo’s network is the main monetary supporter to the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA); this organization serves a financial advisor and helps elect GOP attorneys general. 20 attorneys general from the Republican party have also filed a document in favor of the case. A Leo organization gave $83 million to RAGA during the 28th political season, according to the association’s federal documents. The maximum contribution from the Leo collective was $2.5 billion presented to DonorsTrust, a donor-advised fund that pools contributions from numerous benefactors and distributes it mainly to right-wing and libertarian organizations.
