The Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) are programs that provide fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from Pennsylvania farmers’ markets to WIC participants and eligible seniors. These programs were established in 1993, and since then, have been geared toward expanding their awareness and use of markets. This exciting initiative happens every year between June 1 through November 30.

Sharon Zook, a community leader and businesswoman, has announced her candidacy for County Commissioner of Lebanon County. Zook is a long-time resident of the county, having grown up in a plain Mennonite home adjacent to her grandparents’ farm along the Snitz Creek. She has been recognized for her honesty, integrity, ingenuity, and attention to detail.

Significant social problems including bigotry, systemic racism. political turmoil, food and housing insecurities, violence, the opioid epidemic, etc… preceded, and in some cases, were worsening in our communities prior to the arrival of COVID. As COVID spread, every aspect of peoples’ existence on earth was impacted. A National Institute of Health article points out that, “the COVID-19-pandemic-related economic and social crises [led] to huge challenges for all spheres of human life across the globe. Various challenges highlighted by this pandemic include, but are not limited to, the need for global health cooperation and security, better crisis management, coordinated funding in public health emergencies, and access to measures related to prevention, treatment and control.”

Lebanon Bicycle Recycle, a program of the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition, is hosting a free Cinco de Mayo Slow Ride on May 5 at 6:00 pm. The four-mile ride through the streets of Lebanon is a celebration of the holiday, with participants encouraged to decorate their bikes with flowers and enjoy tacos and refreshments at the end. The event is open to the public, and helmets are required for all riders. In addition to the Slow Ride, Lebanon Bicycle Recycle has several community cycling events planned, including Healthy Kids Day and the Ride of Silence. The organization is also accepting bike donations and seeking bilingual volunteers to assist with their programs.
