Harrisburg, Pa-“We cannot allow Russia’s unprovoked attack against Ukraine to go unanswered. This invasion demands a swift, strong response from the United States and the rest of the world.” said the Pennsylvania Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman (R-34) in a recent press release. State lawmakers have been speaking up about the recent Russian invasion in Ukraine. Governor Wolf has also spoken against the invasion “”I stand with President Biden in condemning the unprovoked and unjustified Russian military invasion of the independent country of Ukraine. This attack on a peaceful country is shocking and its impacts will be far reaching.” in a statement. Governments around the world have been sanctioning Russia foe the recent invasion, yet, one of the problems countries face is their dependency of Russian energy.
Pennsylvania is one of the countries top energy producers which could help United States in providing energy and becoming less dependent on Russian energy suppliers. According to the US Energy information administration Pennsylvania is an essential party in the supply of natural gas production “Pennsylvania’s marketed natural gas production, primarily from the Marcellus Shale, reached a record 7.1 trillion cubic feet in 2020, and the state is the nation’s second-largest natural gas producer after Texas.” says in their website using information from recent studies. According to the US Energy information administration, Pennsylvania is the third largest net supplier of energy in the United States, after Wyoming and Texas.
Pennsylvania is clearly in a place to support the federal government in becoming less dependent of Russia for energy supplies. Many Pennsylvanians and individuals around the country fear that the sanctions against Russia will increase prices of energy utilities and gas. President Joe Biden said that his administration is doing everything in their power to not let the sanctions affect United States.
“Today, I joined my Senate Republican colleagues (Senator Wayne Langerholc, Jr., Senator Joe Pittman and Senator Gene Yaw) in calling for President Biden to reopen the Keystone XL Pipeline to reassert our nation’s energy independence. We must also continue bipartisan efforts to increase all domestic energy production and exports to European countries as a means to reduce Russian influence in the region. said Corman in his February 25th press release.
