Green Day know how to close out a tour in style. The veteran Bay Area trio helped wrap up the North American leg of their massive Hella Mega tour this week by pulling a classic joke on tour mates Weezer. “What’s a tour without a good ‘ol prank at the end?! Gotcha @Weezer” GD wrote in a clip posted on Tuesday night (Sept. 7).
Though it’s unclear from the video if the trio of stage intruders are, in fact Green Dayers Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt, it sure looked like the fun-loving threesome hamming it up as Weezer ripped through “Surf Wax America.” Trying to keep a straight face, Rivers Cuomo and company ripped through the song from their 1994 self-titled “Blue” album while a man in a mask wearing a very snug red speedo, black jacket, hat and shoes bashed the drums, as a mask-wearing Elvis impersonator with a fez did high kicks and someone in a horse costume shimmied on the drum riser.
While it wasn’t clear who was behind the masks or when the video was shot, the final date of the Hella Mega North American run was on Monday at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park. The next scheduled date on the tour won’t take place until June 19, 2022 at the Ernst-Happel Stadion in Vienna, Austria, the kick-off to a run that is slated to wrap up on July 2 at the Paris La Defense Arena in Paris, France.
