We all know that student loans debt is a consistent issue we talk about in society and the current administration in the White House has been looking for ways to provide relief for this big issue. Recently Howard University joined the group of historically black colleges to forgive the debt of its senior and junior students. “The DC HBCU will clear institutional debts for juniors and seniors facing financial hardships as a result of COVID-19. Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick said in a statement that for students who have an expected family contribution of $0 and an outstanding balance for the spring 2021 semester, the university will eliminate all of their current debt.” (Business Insider).
COVID-19 has affected millions of lives and their ability to pay their college debt and this has caused a turmoil in the nation as people need to find ways to pay for their day to day bills as well as their college debt bill. Many have been advocating for the dissolution of all student debt. Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the main proponents of this idea, has been working to make this happen for years.””We take our responsibility to our community, and to all those who place their trust in us for their education or employment, very seriously,” Frederick said. “Howard will always devote as much of our resources as we can to minimize the challenges our staff and students encounter.”(Business Insider). The university is using the reliefs provided by the federal government to help their students be able to position themselves in a better position with the current world events.
As economic hardship becomes a more problematic issue in the country, more and more people are supportive of the idea of erasing student debt and working to find ways to make college more affordable or even completely free.””The president has the power to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt right now,” Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren previously told Insider. “Senator Schumer and I are going to continue to push for this, but Biden doesn’t need any authorization from Congress. He needs to pick up the pen and do it himself.”(Business Insider). If the president takes action in this manner, this will be the best news millions of people who fall in this category of having less than $50,000 would receive in a long time.
