Another day, another fun Kellyoke cover. Kelly Clarkson opened up the Sept. 20 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show with a throwback to the ’90s and enlisted her band for her version of the Spin Doctor’s signature hit, “Two Princes.”
Clarkson sang the song true to its form and had her backing band Y’all keep the instrumentation similar to the original. To make the cover her own, Clarkson peppered in lofty vocal runs and high notes for added persona and flair.
“Marry him or marry me/ I’m the one that loves you baby can’t you see? /I ain’t got no future or a family tree,” Clarkson jubilantly sang in the chorus. “But I know what a prince and lover ought to be/ I know what a prince and lover ought to be.”
The Kelly Clarkson Show’s official Twitter account later tweeted, “This *might* be the most fun the band has ever had during a #Kellyoke,” along with a raised hands emoji.
“Two Princes” was released as the second single from Spin Doctors’ debut album, Pocket Full of Kryptonite. The song enjoyed success on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking in the No. 7 spot in April 1993. The chart-topping hit spent a total of 29 weeks on the chart. The Spin Doctors’ debut album also managed to top the Billboard 200 for 115 weeks, and peaked in the No. 3 position on the chart. It has since gone five-times platinum.
