We have seen the rise of people distaste in how “the media” has been misguiding our society in terms of the issues that really matter, the bias that exist in today’s environment and how we can see that “reports” can also seem to be opinion based more than the reporting of facts. More and more divide exist in our communities because members of society feel that newspapers, tv news channels and radio stations seem to care more about propaganda and attention than the novel ideal of reporting the news. Conservative and progressive groups alike keep pushing for their agendas to be in the headlines but the question that many ask themselves is “what happened to traditional news reporting? When did we see the shift in terms of how news organizations engage with their audiences?”.
In a recent Facebook poll we asked community members in central Pennsylvania the following question: Do you feel news outlets should provide more “good news” ”Should there be a balance (In terms of the emotional impact of the type of news published)? Please explain why.
Here are some of the responses we got:
Angela “I feel news outlets, especially local ones should focus on a complete news story, lots more details would be great. Also, follow up stories to major stories (What happened next)?”
Jamie “Our local news stations, in my opinion, should report facts, perhaps a weekly “hot topic” where a D & R can provide FACTUAL opposing/agreeing views on policy as it affects our local/state needs, and acknowledge local community members that are serving/achieving in their respective communities. I honestly think that most of our local stations do a decent job at this but everyone NEEDS to turn off 24 hour “news” outlets. They are in the business of BUSINESS, making money by enticing viewers with drama and hyperbole. 90% of the content isn’t news, it’s opinion. Perhaps if everyone turns off the big guys, puts their focus on community and their neighbors, realizes that we’re nearly all alike; trying to work hard, care for family and friends, do the “right” thing, live the “American Dream,” maybe we’d put rancor aside and not rely on others to tell us how to feel/think/see things.”
Phillip “First priority would be news stories that have an immediate impact on our lives. After that, what ever”
Kathy “What about the world news that they are supressing… India is over covid because they gave the ivermectin to there people, Australia is kidnapping kids to inject them forcing injecting aboriginals FIFA Has had over 100 athletes and coaches die in the last month.. why?Countries acrosd the world are standing up and rioting against the dictatorships all the countries have become now… where is the real news… not made up fear mongering stuff but real actual news… you want to be a real reporter go work for project veritas thats where the real news is”
Mike “They should report facts. Not politically driven agendas”
Most of the responses in the poll reflected the same feeling that our communities want “the facts” and not opinions when it comes to news reporting. The role of the media is to be honest and clear of what are facts and what are opinions according to community members. The community does not seem to care for a specific type of news )Positive or negative) in terms of the emotional impact these pieces of news may have on us. Surprisingly, we have found that not much research has been done in regards to the role of the media in the state of mind of those who consume daily news. “The studies available on the relationship between news exposure and affect dogenerally support the notion that exposure to news reports affects our moods and state ofmind. More specifically, a direct relationship between negative news exposure and negative emotional states was found in a number of experimental studies”(de Hoog, N. and Verboon, P. (2020), Is the news making us unhappy? The influence of daily news exposure on emotional states. Br J Psychol, 111: 157-173. We have been able to see that people care about the news, positive or negative, and yet not satisfied in how the information has been delivered with a certain political agenda in mind.
