On the penultimate night of blind auditions on The Voice, a 16-year-old gave the sweetest performance. Sweet enough to earn a three-chair turn.
Hailing San Rafael, California, Sophia Bromberg hit Conan Gray’s “Heather,” showing off a multiple-octave range, clever use of vibrato and some freakish “whistle” notes.
Everyone turned in quick succession, save for country music specialist Blake Shelton, who decided he’d miss out to protect someone on his own team.
“Congratulations. That was so beautiful and so interesting,” Ariana Grande told the teen. “There are so many people in that throat box…they’re all so beautiful and interesting and well-controlled and well-oiled.”
John Legend commended her on showcasing a broad palate of styles, while Kelly Clarkson enthused: “You paint with your vocal cords. And I think it’s incredibly cool.”
Bromberg had a big decision to make. And she went with Team Grande.
If that wasn’t enough excitement for one week, the youngster also bragged about scoring her driver’s license. Her race starts here.
The Voice blinds auditions wrap up on Tuesday night (Oct. 5).
