Three months after somebody in St. Louis’ public safety department indicated they were going to look into the way off-duty police personnel are assigned by corporations to guard some locales, officials announced they discovered a consultant to undertake it but were still in search of money to pay for it. The declaration to re-examine police secondary employments came in September following ProPublica revealed how the hiring of private policings forces in St. Louis worsens inequality in how the locale is guarded. Heather Taylor, Deputy Public Safety Director, reacted to the revelations in ProPublica by announcing the city’s plan to employ a specialist to examine the matter. Subsequently, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones expressed her intention to modify the approach to private law enforcement to expel differences. Jones proclaimed in a St. Louis Public Radio interview this month that individuals with a high income who pay more in taxes should not be given any more specialized protection than any other individual. We as citizens contribute to taxes so that we all receive the same level of protection from the police force. Jones recently brought in the first external chief for the police department in its 214-year reign, an action that may lead to a drastic makeover. Robert Tracy, the head of Wilmington, Delaware, will initiate in January.
